Back to College and Saving Green

While so much of the focus on back-to-school is on younger children, our young adults are also heading to class.   Even though I still have nightmares about finals and papers (truth), I often look back longingly at that time in my life. Go Ducks!

One thing I do not remember fondly was the expense of textbooks. There is nothing more difficult for a poor college student than that trip to the bookstore to buy all the required textbooks for the next semester. Those things are dreadfully expensive, sometimes prohibitively so.

When I was in school we were lucky to have one bookstore which carried used textbooks. It was a lucky day when they had what you needed. I even spent one term without a required text because it was too expensive. (Shh, I still got an A.)

Now there is an appealing alternative to spending hundreds of dollars on textbooks each term: renting textbooks from CampusBookRentals. Why is renting better than buying?

  • Reusing books is green and saves you green!
  • Save 40-90% off of bookstore prices.
  • Free shipping both ways.
  • Can highlight in the textbooks.
  • Flexible renting periods.
  • We donate to Operation Smile with each textbook rented.

I snuck a peek at a course I took in college to see what the required textbooks would be. This is one…

Essentials of Ecology Textbook

Through the University bookstore, this book would cost $115 used and $153.25 new. It looks like a fascinating book and I am sure is going to make a lot of young ecologists and environmentalists learn a lot about “scientific principles and concepts, ecosystems, evolution, biodiversity, population ecology, and sustainability.”

However, this same book on CampusBookRentals is far less than half even the used price. Sounds like a great idea to me. Sometimes this technology stuff really is useful.

Make a Difference Through Renting Textbooks

CampusBookRentals has partnered with Operation Smile for two years. Last year they committed to donating enough money to cover a minimum of 1,000 life changing surgeries. This year they keep up their partnership, but have also added another way they are making a difference in the world; they have set aside $90,000 in textbook scholarships to be distributed to students who need the extra help.

Operation Smile is an incredible international charity that gives evaluations and free surgeries for children with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities. Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft often leaving them unable to eat, speak, or smile. In the developed world, most of these birth defects are repaired early in life. In the developing world, children do not typically have access to the care needed to treat a cleft. They are often shunned and 1 in 10 die before their first birthdays. These donations are truly life changing.

Do you see textbook rentals as eco-friendly and cost-saving? If you are headed to college this fall, would you consider renting your textbooks?

This is a sponsored post from CampusBookRentals. They asked for my honest opinion and that is never for sale. I believe this service may be of value to some readers and that is the only reason I am sharing it. This post may have affiliate links.
